13 Budget-Friendly and Crafty Themes for A Child's Birthday Party

If the thought of your child turning a year older fills you with dread rather than excitement, realize that you're not alone.

Your child may ask for a party to celebrate her birthday with friends from your neighborhood or school, and you're often left wondering if you can afford it.

And parents have good reasons to worry. The costs of food, party supplies, a photographer, loot bag fillers, as well as entertainers like mascots or clowns can rack up serious expenses.

Why not pare down and omit certain non-negotiables, and choose a crafty theme for your child's birthday party instead?

Why Choose A Crafty Theme for Your Child's Birthday Party?

You get to decide where to scrimp and save.

Venue

Your home is the likeliest venue for a budget-friendly and crafty birthday party. You can prep your garage or dining room, or clear any clutter in your backyard.

Invitations

Economize and skip the paper invitations by designing your own on the free feature of design software like Canva.

Make sure details like your home address, date and time of the birthday party, and contact information are accurate.

Decorations

Refrain from going overboard and skip the balloons and colorful backdrop.

Instead, consider the basic colors of the birthday party's theme. Get some cardstock, construction paper, or scrapbook paper and twine and create a bunting that matches the colors of your theme.

You can also get a large sheet of  poster paper and spell out the letters "H A P P Y  B I R T H D A Y + (your child's name) using poster paint or colorful markers. Add squiggles and odd shapes.

Party supplies

You don't need to have every detail match the theme of the birthday party. You can serve food on plain paper plates and have your guests drink from paper cups and use plastic cutlery.

Host

If you already have your hands full, get your child's favorite relative, teacher, or coach to play sparkling host.

Photo booth

You can recycle a large sheet of cardboard into a photo frame by applying techniques in decoupage or papier mache and using poster or acrylic paint.

Loot bag/box fillers

These can be optional. But if you have a limited number of guests, you can fill a loot bag or box with biscuits or crackers instead of candies and other sweets.

Other inexpensive options are small toys, sticker sheets, and school supplies.

You can get the child involved in planning most aspects of the birthday party.

Planning a birthday party will allow your child to explore his creativity and exercise his imagination.

Your child also becomes aware of constraints regarding budget, time, and resources, and work around them by streamlining the creative process and making do with available materials instead of getting frustrated.

You can recycle some of the stuff you have at home.

For starters, you would need a stash of old newspapers and spread them over your dining table if your child and her guests will use materials like glue or paint.

You can also use any leftover arts and crafts-related items you have lying around the house, like colorful yarn or ribbons from your child's school projects, stickers, construction and scrapbook paper.

Guests can be guaranteed of fun and enjoyment.

Adult chaperones can't just supervise the children, they can also join in on the fun.

Food and refreshments can be simple and fuss-free.

You can serve finger sandwiches, nachos and chips with dips, fried chicken, hotdogs or hamburgers, and pasta.

If you have a punch bowl, you can prepare ice cold lemonade, iced tea, or fruit juice.

You can bake the birthday cake yourself if you're capable. If not, drop by the nearest bake shop or pastry store and get a simple cake, and then get your child to help you decorate it with miniature marshmallows and cookies, M&M's or Smarties, and chocolate sprinkles.

Having said all of the above, here are 13 themes for a child's birthday party that are budget-friendly and crafty:

DIY Gift: Scrapbook-in-A-Jar

As a crafter, you may have people within your close-knit circle who are into scrapbooking, or may be into several crafts including scrapbooking.

It could be a family member, a distant relative, a neighbor or colleague, a lady with whom you have lunch once a week, or a member of your Bible study group.

It could also be someone among your group of volunteers.

Instead of giving your crafter friends a pricey scrapbook kit, have you ever thought of trying something unique and putting together scrapbook materials inside a jar?

Is Scrapbooking Still Popular?

As an industry, scrapbooking has peaked in the mid-2000s, with brick-and-mortar stores dedicated to scrapbooking supplies and tools turning up nearly every year.

Scrapbooking, as a hobby, has reached the far-flung corners of the world, with workshops and retreats being held to demonstrate new techniques, introduce popular brands, and to get scrappers to showcase their works.

Admittedly, the scrapbook craze has slowed down since its heyday in the mid-2000s, but it has remained to be a popular hobby.

Scrapbooking: How it Has Adapted in the Digital Age

While digital scrapbooking is now a thing, a lot of scrappers deviated from attending workshops and retreats to joining Facebook groups dedicated to all things scrapbooking.

There are also lot of websites that cater to scrappers and paper crafters that offer free printables of scrapbook paper, as well as tutorials on making scrapbook pages look more aesthetic, how to use different tools to achieve desired effects, etc.

Why Give A Scrapbook-in-A-Jar as A DIY Gift?

Scrapbooks-in-a-jar are budget-friendly.

An entire scrapbook kit can be extremely pricey. And even if you select a few materials from your stash and buy the rest piece-meal, the thought of putting everything within the constraints of a jar will help you prioritize which scrapbook materials to include.

You can customize or personalize each scrapbook-in-a-jar.

No 2 scrappers are alike. One of them may be a stay-at-home mom in her 30s who enjoys storing photos of her family vacations and arranging them aesthetically within the pages of a scrapbook.

Another may be an elderly lady who recently retired from the workplace, and picked up scrapbooking as a hobby to keep herself preoccupied.

And then there are the scrappers who incorporate their interests, tastes, and preferences into their scrapbooks.

To illustrate, animal lovers who are into cats and dogs may be looking for die cuts of paw prints or bones. Sports junkies would appreciate miniature basketballs or footballs.

Still, a few others see scrapbooking as a healthy way to de-stress.

So when personalizing your scrapbooks-in-a-jar, here's a list of questions to consider:

  • Does she like putting a lot of photos into her scrapbooking layout, and enhance the pages by adding embellishments?
  • Does he combine text (either handwritten or printed) with pictures and embellishments?
  • What are her favorite themes (travel, special occasions, family activities, goals achieved) and color templates?
  • Was there ever a time when scrapbooking became a way to cope for her (e.g. to help deal with the loss of a family member, close relative, pet, etc.)?
  • What effects does he enjoy using in scrapbooking?
  • Does she keep a lot of mementos (e.g. concert tickets, movie passes, notes, greeting cards, holiday letters, etc.) and incorporate them into her scrapbooks?

You can declutter and destash some of your scrapbook materials when putting together scrapbooks-in-a-jar.

If you already feel like you've hoarded too many scrapbook materials, giving some of them away can help you declutter and destash.

Customizing a scrapbook-in-a-jar is a good exercise in creativity.

There are no hard-and-fast rules in putting scrapbooks-in-a-jar together. So go ahead; let your imagination loose and your creativity run free.

You don't need to adhere to all the craft materials mentioned in the list below.

You can use excess wrapping paper, quilling paper turned into stars to act as fillers, lace, paper doilies, old newspapers and magazine pages.

(2.) Seal the jar with the lid.

(3.) Punch a hole onto the gift tag and insert the ribbon. Tie it around the lid of your scrapbook-in-a-jar.

(4.) Using a felt-tip pen or marker, print the recipient's name on the gift tag. Or, to make it fancier, use a calligraphy pen.

DIY Scrapbook-in-A-Jar: Add-Ons and Smart Substitutes

Here are other ways to customize your scrapbook-in-a-jar:

  • Insert a cute or whimsical bookmark inside the jar.
  • Use a craft puncher to shape gift tags into hearts or stars.
  • Wrap washi tape around the lid of the jar.
  • Clip on a miniature keychain or twilly onto the ribbon instead of a gift tag.
  • Replace the ribbon with a tassel or pom pom made of colorful yarn.

7 Ways to Plan Crafty Activities With Friends

You may already be hanging out regularly with a solid group of friends. They may be long-time friends from school, your colleagues at the workplace, singles' group or Bible study group from church, or ladies with whom you go out for lunch or cocktails during evenings.

Image from freepik

And even if you only hang out with certain groups of friends occasionally, you may be at a loss for ideas to do with them this 2025.

So why not try and incorporate crafts into your group activities this year?

Why Plan Crafty Activities With A Group of Friends?

Crafty activities are relatively frugal.

You and your friends may wish to take a break from going on vacations and taking trips for now, since airfare is pricey. Add to the rates of accommodations and meals, and you'll be sure to rack up some serious expenses.

However, staying inside with friends doesn't mean getting bored with the usual movie marathons, video games, card and adult board games, or watching sports on TV.

Crafty group activities can be done at least a couple of weekends a month.

Crafty activities can be low-key and suit even introverts.

If you'd like to make your introverted friends more comfortable in social settings, you can organize a crafty group activity, with only around 6-8 guests attending.

Crafts are ideal for introverts who shun making small talk as much as possible. Everyone will  be busy anyway, with your hands preoccupied most of the time.

Crafty activities can be adapted to suit different friend groups.

Do the words "crafty group activities" conjure images of elderly ladies quilting or working on a scrapbook in your mind?

Or maybe the words bring up a kindergarten class getting messy with colorful paper and glue.

Well, you'll be surprised, because with the vast array of crafts available these days, you're sure to find something to suit your group of friends.

What's even better is, a crafty activity can be incorporated onto different occasions and social settings.

To illustrate, a crafty group activity might mean painting ceramic mugs, making floral bouquets, and having a calligraphy session during a bachelorette party.

Image from freepik

Another example is pre-teen girls crafting beaded accessories as the focal point of a pajama party.

You can decorate the venue with the same craft materials you'll use for the group activity.

This will feel like hitting two birds with one stone. And don't forget to take pictures before, during, and after the crafty activity, if only to remind everyone how much fun it can be.

Crafty activities may help you and your friends cut down on unhealthy habits.

You and a few of your buddies from work may be trying to cut back on your drinking. So instead of hitting the bars on a weekend night, you decide to host them at home.

You can try masculine crafts like whittling, making leather coasters, designing manly greeting cards, and crafting accessories like this cool paracord bracelet.

Everyone gets to take home something from the crafty activity.

This is probably the best part of enjoying a crafty activity with friends -- no one will leave home empty-handed!

Everyone can take pride in their finished crafts that they'd get to take home.

Having said all of the above, here are 7 ways to plan crafty activities with friends:

(1.) Decide on a venue.

For small groups or during more intimate occasions, it's best to host the crafty activity at home.

If you need more space, inquire at your local library if you can rent a wing, or a room at a multi-purpose hall.

If you're craving for a more structured setting and will be needing assistance for your group activity, check into an arts and crafts cafe that charges a small fee for admission and craft supplies.

If you and your friends won't mind shelling out more money, there are paint-and-sip cafes, ceramics and pottery sessions, and scrapbook retreats to consider.

(2.) Choose a craft that's simple enough that even newbies among the group can do them with relative ease.

Refrain from the types of crafts that are too time-consuming, or those with complex procedures that will easily frustrate the newbies in your group.

(3.) Choose an inclusive craft.

For your crafty group activity to be successful, make sure everyone is at least a wee bit familiar with the craft.

For example, there are paper tole kits that are simple enough to assemble. But make sure to explain the importance of the 3D effects of the craft.

(4.) Select a craft that allows everyone to express their creativity and personal tastes.

You may need to acquire craft materials in different colors, textures, sizes, and shapes. And never disregard good quality.

(5.) Decorate with craft supplies that are easily accessible.

The key is to take note of craft materials that can easily be ordered online, or bought from arts and crafts stores, or the hobbies section of a general merchandise store or department store.

(6.) Get a teaching assistant to help you demonstrate the procedures.

This is crucial if you'll be hosting the crafty activity at home. You'll need all the help you can get if you want crafting to go as smooth and seamless as possible.

(7.) Make a few samples of the finished craft ahead of time.

Everyone in the group must have an idea of what the finished craft must look like (e.g. a decoupaged cardboard box) before they can modify it to suit their tastes and preferences.

7 Qualities of A Handmade Craft Business Idea

The new year may hold a lot of promises and hope for most of us.

And as a long-term crafter, you may have thought about (finally!) letting go of relying on employment, taking on the reins, and starting your own handmade craft business.

"But I'm still unsure about leaving my 9-to-5, to be honest. The economy is so uncertain these days."

Worry no more, because the good news is you don't need to plunge deep into the world of a startup business immediately.

You have the option to work on your handmade crafts part-time at first, before or after dinner, and during weekends.

Having said all of the above, make sure that your handmade craft business idea has these 7 qualities in order to have the potential to thrive:

(**DISCLAIMER: This blog post contains affiliate links. Every time you click on those links and make a purchase, I'll collect a commission.)

(1.) A Handmade Craft Business Idea Must Meet the Needs and Demands of the Market

Ideas for a handmade craft business must meet the needs and demands of specific groups of people.

Why? Because everything boils down to people turning into customers.

That's why you need to entice, convince, or persuade people to part with their hard-earned money by crafting products of good quality.

The key is to set aside your ego and think about what people actually want or need, and not what you want, or think other people want.

To give you a head start, here are just a few ways to conduct a market study and do extensive research:

  • Start scrolling through several social media platforms. Observe which handmade crafts get the most favorable response and volume of orders.
  • Frequent weekend markets, bazaars, and craft fairs.
  • Drop by gift or souvenir shops.
  • Explore different pop-up stores or kiosks.
  • Get in touch with organizers of events and parties, and ask which handcrafted items make for popular giveaways or souvenirs.

What about handmade crafts that are highly niched?

An example of a highly niched business idea is customized cupsleeve kits for KPop celebrities's cupsleeve events.

BTS J-Hope & Suga
cupsleeve kits (Unofficial)
by Adore Hue

What's crucial about designing and customizing such kits is, as a crafter, you'll be highly likely to get a fairly huge volume per an organizer's order, even if the frequency might be irregular.

You need to go out, widen your network, and build your contact with numerous organizers of KPop cupsleeve events in order to assure of requests for customizing cupsleeve kits every month.

Another way to help stabilize your cash flow is to cater to the KPop-loving market by being familiar with handcrafted items for which members of fandoms are willing to spend.

You can sew tote bags, design and print fan-made stickers and art prints (chibi-style is the most popular), bookmarks, "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" photos, keychains, chunky phone accessories, and button pins.

Should a crafter consider seasonal crafts for a business idea?

You may also be considering business ideas like crocheting amigurumi for gift bundles for a baby shower, a house warming party, Valentine's, and anniversaries.

Also, you may be concerned about the volume of sales if you wish to sell greeting cards, craft kits for occasions like children's parties or hen dos, and handcrafted products like Halloween decorations or ornaments for Christmas trees.

While all these are examples of salable yet seasonal crafts, there are several ways to keep your small business afloat during off-season, when demand isn't as high.

A crocheter or knitter can add other products, like scrunchies, coasters, pot holders, scarves, and plushies in bigger sizes.

A crafter can supplement her craft kits with a scrapbook service (either physical or digital) showcasing photos of the children's party or wedding.

(2.) An Idea for A Handmade Craft Business Must Show A Competitive Advantage

It's a fact that the business of handmade crafts is saturated. As a crafter, you must come up with ways to stand out while meeting the demands of your market.

To illustrate, giving a framed caricature or cross stitched portrait used to be a unique idea for a gift, until a lot of artists and stitchers picked up on the trend.

A good way for a crafter to set himself apart from caricature artists and stitchers would be to offer a photo rendered in diamond painting.

She can further add services like doing a portrait of a client's pet, a favorite celebrity or athlete.

A crafter can also pencil in a client's desired image onto fabric, and use the punch needle technique and have it framed within an embroidery hoop.

(3.) A Handmade Craft Business Idea Must Be Scalable

Ever wondered why businesses need a 5-year or 10-year plan? Because a handmade craft business should be scalable in a sense that it needs to show growth potential.

(4.) A Handmade Craft Business Idea Must Have A Low Barrier Entry

Depending on the type of crafts you plan to make and sell, you must be able to access raw materials, either through shopping at arts and crafts stores, or the hobbies section of a general merchandise store.

Ordering craft materials online through apps like Shopee and Lazada is another option.

(5.) You Must Be Able to Promote A Handmade Craft Business Idea, Even On A Shoestring Budget

Marketing-wise, you can never compete with huge businesses and better known brands as a crafter.

That's why to launch your handmade crafts business off the ground, you need to explore ways make your products known to your niche, or target customers.

Some of the least expensive ways is to come up with an official Facebook Page and Instagram account for your handmade crafts.

All you need is to take clear photos of your handmade crafts and upload them, write a brief description along with appropriate hashtags (#).

(6.) An Idea for A Handmade Craft Business Must Show Potential for Profitability

As a crafter who's looking to make profit from a handmade business idea, several factors come into play.

First, you need to compute your monthly overhead expenses, including utility and meals.

Second, how much are you willing to shell out during a certain period to buy raw materials for your handmade crafts?

Sanrio Popmart-inspired
cute y2k phone strap
by babyrhian08

Third, if the creative process might be too complex, that you end up spending a lot of time crafting just one product, either simplify or streamline the process, or resolve to accept only pre-orders from customers.

(7.) An Idea for A Handmade Craft Business Must Be Sustainable

As a crafter who's looking to start a business, your idea must be sustainable. In its simplest term, sustainable means having the potential for long-term success.

Even a business idea that's focused on seasonal products has the potential to be sustainable.

Let's say you decided to customize or personalize gifts for different occasions -- birthday, Valentine's, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Christmas.

This business idea is sustainable because there will always be people celebrating their birthday everyday, Christmas every year, couples remembering each other on Valentine's and anniversaries, and adult children wanting to make their parents feel special on Mother and Father's Day.

Small Business Idea for People With Disabilities: Handmade Crafts From Home

For people with disabilities, managing a handmade crafts business at the comfort of their own home might help pave the way toward financial stability.

Image from freepik

Eventually, once the startup, home-based business gets more and more established, it might afford financial freedom for people with disabilities.

In time, people with disabilities managing small businesses can be included among a sector that's an asset to society.

Classifications of Disabilities

A disability can range from mild to moderate to severe. According to Republic Act (RA) 7277, a disability can fall into any of the following categories:

  • psychosocial disability
  • mental disability
  • disability due to chronic illnesses
  • visual disability
  • orthopedic disability
  • learning disability

How Do You Define A Person With Disability (PWD)?

Regardless of level of severity and classification of disability, a person with disability is someone whose disability affects him physically, mentally, or socially.

There are people who, in spite of being afflicted with a disability, are doing their best to cope.

They may have adjusted or altered, or completely modified, their lifestyles.

If they have remained functional, they can opt to start a handmade crafts business from home as an alternative to employment.

What Advantages Can A Person With Disability Gain From Managing A Handmade Crafts Business From Home?

Low overhead expenses

Since a handmade crafts business can be managed from home, a person with disability can set up a workspace at a corner of her bedroom, a craft room, a basement or den.

A person with disability doesn't need to maintain a brick-and-mortar store and keep track of a large inventory.

And while a person with disability must factor in the costs of utility, he can do meal preps in his own kitchen and not think about expenses for everyday commute.

People with disabilities can comparison shop for craft materials of good quality at the most affordable prices

People with disabilities can shun buying craft materials from department stores or highly commercialized shopping spaces.

There's just as wide a variety of craft materials from lesser known stores that specialize on crafts, or the hobbies section of a general merchandise store.

Another option is to bulk buy craft materials from online stores from shopping apps like Lazada, Tiktok, and Shopee.

The option for people with disabilities to operate a small business part-time at first

It must be noted that anxiety  people with psychosocial disabilities. Therefore, some of them might be hesitant of facing the challenges of managing a small business from home.

People with disabilities can operate a handmade crafts business part-time at first. They can carve out 2-3 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, keeping the creative process simple and streamlined.

Multiple crafts have high-profit potential

People with disabilities won't have any problems in coming up with salable ideas to sustain a home-based business, or even make it thrive.

This makes handmade crafts a low-barrier-entry niche among small business ideas.

There are craft items that can easily be made by hand and sold at wholesale prices that will appeal to a wide market; stuff like bag charms, macrame keychains, refrigerator magnets, bouquets of chenille flowers, greeting cards, bookmarks, and amigurumi.

Image from freepik

The opportunity for people with disabilities to serve the needs of a niche market

There are potential customers out there who look for novelty, uniqueness, and even that rare "shock factor" in handcrafted products.

If people with disabilities can meet the needs of such market, regardless of how niched, they have the potential to make a profit.

The option for people with disabilities to sell their products online

People with disabilities, as managers of small businesses, don't have the luxury of shelling out a huge budget for ads and other paid forms of marketing.

Therefore, people with disabilities need to be as creative and imaginative as possible in promoting their handcrafted products.

For starters, they can come up with their official Facebook Page and Instagram account and upload photos.

The option to get products delivered or shipped

Customers are almost always looking for a small business that offers a delivery service.

The good news is, as a person with disability, you can charge an extra fee for shipping or delivery.

There are multiple ways for people with disabilities to get paid

People with disabilities won't need to complain about collecting payment from customers.

In the Philippines, people with disabilities can download payments apps like GCash and Maya, as these are some of the fast and most convenient ways to accept payment (although not 100% hassle-free).

To Augment Other Sources of Income, You Can Manage A Small Business From Home Part-Time As A Person With Disability

In contrast to developed countries like the United States, which grants people with disabilities a monthly allowance, the Philippines only allows certain privileges to individuals qualified as people with disabilities (PWDs).

One of these privileges is a person with disability that allows a 20% discount for purchasing basic commodities like food and medicine.

Instances When Managing A Small Business Full-Time From Home Can Be Better for People With Disabilities

When employment isn't possible

Under Republic Act No. 10524, at least 1% of positions in all government agencies, offices, and corporations in the Philippines shall be reserved for people with disabilities.

Corporations and offices under the private sector are encouraged to do the same.

While this can serve as a beacon of hope for people with disabilities that are still able to work, the fact remains that certain workplaces aren't conducive to the professional growth of people with disabilities.

Some corporations don't offer flexible work arrangement. There are also office buildings that won't accommodate people in wheelchairs, or don't offer assistive technology for the visually impaired.

When mobility is limited

If an individual has the type of disability that prevents him from driving to and from work, or taking public transport, managing a small business from home is a good way to generate income.

When certain jobs require skills that people with disabilities don't possess

If an individual took longer than expected to recover from an incident that left him partially or fully disabled, skills that he once possessed that made him occupationally fit may now be obsolete.

Image from freepik

To illustrate, if a job or position for which a person with disability is vying requires mastery of computer or accounting software, or execution of sophisticated graphic design and a person with disability is lacking those skills, his chances to land the job are extremely low.

When people with disabilities need to consider their mental well-being

It's a fact that in spite of numerous advocacies for equality in the workplace, people with disabilities still struggle with discrimination and office politics.

Generating an income from a small business can be a good alternative to employment.

When people with disabilities want to keep face-to-face interaction down to a minimum

For some people with disabilities that cause them to be ridden with anxiety or social awkwardness, they might wish to keep face-to-face interaction down to a minimum.

While a good amount of selling is essential for a business to thrive, what's even more important for people with disabilities is to invest in the right type of marketing.

One of the best ways is to upload clear photos of their crafts across several social media platforms and attach corresponding keywords as hashtags (#).
